Windows 11 and Retrouver, are the system requirements too restrictive?

AI PCs have been in the news a lot for several months. Microsoft has already launched its Surface range equipped with Intel AI processors and is announcing consumer laptops based on a Snapdragon X Elite platform equipped with an NPU.

Today, the giant presented “Recall” aka Retrouver, an AI-powered feature that accompanies this next generation of Windows 11 PCs. It is part of a panel of new features called Copilot+ PC features

This advancement is not available to everyone at the moment. It is only aimed at a tiny part of the Windows community because it is associated in marketing discourse with a Snapdragon X Elite processor. This requirement is likely to upset many, if not all, users since this type of processor is currently non-existent in the PC segment.

There is, however, hope because by searching the Microsoft site it is possible to read about Retrouver

  • On devices not equipped with a Snapdragon X processor, installing a Windows update will be required to use Retrouver.

All is therefore not lost because if NPUs are not yet popular, PCs often include graphics cards whose GPUs have significant power for AI-related calculations.

What is the Copilot+ PCs Retrouver (Recall) feature?

As we pointed out, Find Out is part of the Copilot+ PC features. It works to make each of its past actions searchable.

This involves recording the screen and using this data to help find things. For example, if you search for a conversation to extract information from it, Retrouver will be able to examine all the conversations with a specific person to find the desired data.

Find Out is meant to work using natural language, eliminating the need to type precise commands. It does not store data in the cloud and it is possible to delete these snapshots, adjust and delete time ranges and filter applications and websites to prevent them from being recorded.

Microsoft adds:

  • Retrouver is optimized for select languages, including English, Simplified Chinese, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish. In other words, Retrouver is able to retrieve snapshots of your PC timeline based on more advanced searches in these languages. During the first phase, we will optimize the functionality for other languages. The Find feature can also retrieve snapshots of your PC timeline based on text-to-text searches in over 160 languages
At the same time, the Copilot+ PCs functionalities also include:

  • live subtitles allowing you to subtitle audio and video content in English from 44 languages including French.
  • live subtitles allowing you to subtitle audio and video content in English from 44 languages including French
  • Live co-creator expected to generate images in relation to commands in text form. The English language is in demand because it is likely to generate better images. Commands in other languages may provide less accurate results.
  • Super-resolution promising more beautiful games. At its initial launch, it will only be available on select games available via the Xbox app on Windows PC: 7 Days to Die, BeamNG.drive, Borderlands 3, Control, Dark Souls III, Dying Light, The Forest, God of War , Resident Evil 2, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Skyrim SE, Sons of the Forest, Totally Accurate Battle Simulator, Unturned, Warframe and The Witcher 3.
  • And finally Windows Studio Effects which includes creative filters, portrait lighting, eye contact, portrait blur and voice focus.
